What is a firefighter?

He's the guy next door....

He's a guy like you and me with warts and worries and unfulfilled dreams.

Yet he stands taller than most of us.

He's a fireman....

A fireman is at once the most fortunate and the least fortunate of men.

He's a man who saves lives because he has seen too much death.

He's a gentle man because he has seen the awesome power

of violence out of control.

He's responsive to a child's laughter because his arms have held too many small bodies that will never laugh again....

He doesn't preach the brotherhood of man.

He lives it.

Fire Department Preparedness for Extreme Weather

Emergencies and Natural Disasters

Emmitsburg, MD - The United States Fire Administration (USFA) released today a new technical report titled Fire Department Preparedness for Extreme Weather Emergencies and Natural Disasters. This report examines the impact of extreme weather and natural disasters on the fire service and the types of service calls most likely to arise as a result of these disasters.

"Firefighters continue to be called upon to respond to many types of incidents, disasters, and situations - in all kinds of weather, day and night," said U.S. Fire Administrator Greg Cade. "Our country's fire service is an amazing cadre of specially trained individuals whom the public relies on during emergencies - including extreme weather and natural disasters. This requires all firefighters to be prepared to respond in the most challenging conditions."

This One Is In Memory of Captain Gary Henry

An Indianapolis firefighter killed while serving in Iraq. Capt. Gary Henry was a 12 year veteran of the Indianapolis Fire Department and a 10-year veteran with the Indiana National Guard. He served as a captain with the Indianapolis Fire Department as the Special Operations Rescue Coordinator.

He leaves behind a wife and three children.

Thank You, Rest In Peace!

******************************************************************************************

So as you look at the firefighter with his rake, hose or axe,

His beet red face or ice covered mustache,

You should know why he goes through that smoky front door,

And is forced to crawl like a baby down on the floor.

He does it to save both lives and property,

All that is precious to you and to me.

So take a good look at this modern warrior

who serves his call proud and true,

And know that he would die just to save me and you.
