Central Indiana REACT is incorporated in Indiana (DBA: Central Indiana REACT-CERT); and
we are chartered to work in and assist all the counties of Central Indiana.
Central Indiana REACT-CERT is one of the fastest growing public service / community
groups, with new prospective members, Amateur radio operators, and radio clubs expressing interest in partnering with us almost
every day.
Central
Indiana REACT-CERT combines the best of both group concepts into one community service based organization that can provide
assistance to our community with either public service events or disaster response programs. With our GMRS repeaters on the
Southeast side of Indianapolis and the Northwest side of Indianapolis, we have reliable radio communications spanning from
Hancock County to Hendricks County (East and West), and from Johnson County to Hamilton County (North and South).
Our members receive training from
Federal, State, and Locally Certified Emergency Service personnel not just some on-line webpage. Central Indiana REACT-CERT
members get training in Medical Operations (Including triage, treatment and first aid), Basic fire suppression, Basic search
and rescue, How to organize and conduct disaster operations, ICS/NIMS, Traffic Control, and Community Mapping – Awareness.
What is REACT:
REACT has grown in many ways since its inception in 1962. Our member s monitored
CB channel 9 from their homes spread around our city and county. We utilized a commercial radio service called General Mobile
Radio Service (GMRS). For many years motorists knew that if they needed assistance, all they had to do was to call on channel
9 and REACT would be there, loud and clear, to help.
Several factors, including the decline in popularity of CB radio, spurred a change in direction
and operating procedures of our group. With the strength and unity of our teams, we began to focus on our role as a mutual
aid organization. Our membership is now pursuing amateur radio as a communications resource in addition to the public frequencies
we had always used. We also formed relationships with local government agencies, disaster response agencies and amateur radio
clubs to let them know we were capable and ready to assist during times of disaster.
Today, most of our
team s routine operations are conducted on Amateur, CB, FRS, and GMRS radios. We are capable of operating on almost all HF,
VHF and UHF amateur radio, public safety, and business bands.
We will continue the regular monitoring of CB channel 9 as it is still very
popular with professional drivers, yet we do so much more!
What is CERT?
The Community Emergency
Response Team (CERT) program helps train people to be better prepared to respond to emergency situations in their communities.
When emergencies happen, CERT members can give critical support to first responders, provide immediate assistance to victims,
and organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site. CERT members can also help with non-emergency projects that help improve
the safety of the community.
Following a major disaster, first responders who provide fire and medical services will not be able to meet
the demand for these services. Factors as number of victims, communication failures, and road blockages will prevent people
from accessing emergency services they have come to expect at a moment's notice through 911. People will have to rely
on each other for help in order to meet their immediate life saving and life sustaining needs.
CERT TRAINEES RECEIVE THE FOLLOWING DURING
TRAINING:
An
introduction to CERT
Instruction on medical operations, including triage,
treatment and first aid
Basic fire suppression
Basic search and rescue techniques instruction
How
to organize and conduct operations instruction
CERT role in a terrorist
initiated emergency
Disaster psychology instruction to help victims cope
with the situation
After
completing the above, CERT members may participate in a mock emergency exercise, where the team members respond utilizing
and demonstrating the skills they acquired.
